Application: T6CC Vane Pump & R5U/C5V/R5V Valves


     A metal forming press needed 58 GPM to close its platen at an acceptable speed and 3,500 PSI to produce sufficient force to bend the material. This would require a 125 horsepower electric motor to drive the hydraulic pump. But, the user of this press did not have this much electrical power available to him at his small shop! Do not despair. Upon further investigation it is revealed that the press needed little force to close its platen quickly; but, once the subject metal was contacted and began to bend, the required force went up. Also, not only was it acceptable for the platen to slow down while forming the metal, it was preferred. This feat was easily accomplished with just one 40 horsepower electric motor, through the magic of hydraulic circuitry and the use of standard components. A Parker T6CC double vane pump was harnessed – the front pump producing 41 GPM and the rear pump putting out 17 GPM. The flow from both pumps (58 GPM) is used to move the platen at high speed, but low force, to close the air space. The 40 horsepower is sufficient to push this high flow at up to 1,000 PSI. At this point a Parker R5U pump unloading valve, bolted directly onto the outlet port of the 41 GPM front pump, opens its flow to the reservoir, reducing its need for power to almost zero. A Parker C5V check valve, mounted on the same port as the unloading valve, isolates the two pumps, allowing the 17 GPM rear pump to continue moving the platen at up to 3,500 PSI. Once again making use of the 40 horsepower installed. To stop the pressure from exceeding 3,500 PSI, thus overloading the electric motor, a Parker R5V relief valve is bolted directly onto the outlet port of the rear pump. This hydraulic circuit technique is called High/Low which stands for High Flow / Low pressure & High pressure / Low Flow; allowing for a low horsepower, efficient hydraulic system.
